Chapter 6

THE SEARCH FOR JUSTICE

Remember me.” Witnesses say these were the last words of a fourteen-year-old girl who was murdered by notorious concentration camp guard and overseer Hermine Braunsteiner.1 The girl was not forgotten, although it took almost thirty years for Braunsteiner to be tried for her crimes.

After the war, Nazi war criminals who were not captured by the Allies “went underground” in Europe by assuming new identities or fleeing to other continents. Some Nazi war criminals found refuge in the United States. Braunsteiner, for example, hid in Canada, married an American, and moved to the United States in 1963.2 She might have been able to escape accountability for her crimes had it not been for the dedication of an Austrian and two Americans.
